College Tour University Utrecht

On Thursday, February 27, the ninth edition of the DUFAS College Tour took place at Utrecht University. Nearly 100 students from diverse backgrounds gathered to listen to an engaging conversation with Anne Wilschut (COO of BlackRock) and Johan Terpstra (Director and Fund Manager at Teslin). During this interactive session, they shared their insights on the asset management sector, the societal role of asset managers, and the challenges the sector faces.

The Role of Asset Managers in Society

Throughout the afternoon, Anne and Johan delved into the core of asset management and the social responsibility that asset managers bear. The many questions from students sparked a lively discussion on the influence of asset managers on society. Topics such as the energy transition, defense investments, and the impact of technology, AI, and digital finance on the future of investing were central to the conversation.

Career Paths and Career Choices

Anne took the students through his career journey, sharing insights about his studies, various roles at ING, his position as a pension fund board member, and the path that ultimately led him to BlackRock. As an asset manager, one faces a wide range of challenges, making a diverse background valuable. Johan reflected on the decisions he made throughout his career path. Through their different backgrounds, both speakers demonstrated that there are multiple ways to reach a particular career destination. The key takeaway: choose a direction that intrinsically motivates you.

Small and Large Asset Managers

Although Anne and Johan hold similar positions, the organizations they work for—both asset managers—are fundamentally different. The discussion frequently touched on the differences between large and small asset managers, including the clients they serve, the types of investments they make, and the level of involvement they have with portfolio companies. By exploring these differences, students gained a clearer understanding of the diversity within the asset management sector.

The Rise of AI in Asset Management

Students were particularly interested in the impact of AI on the asset management sector. They asked questions about how AI influences investment strategies and how increasing digitalization affects the selection criteria for new employees. According to Anne and Johan, AI skills are not the decisive factor. The most important qualities of a successful applicant remain their intrinsic motivation, knowledge of (financial) economics, and—most importantly, according to Anne and Johan—their authenticity.

Networking and Deepening Discussions

Following the plenary session, students had the opportunity to ask further in-depth questions and exchange experiences over drinks. These open conversations provided students with a unique opportunity to connect directly with industry leaders and gain a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges within asset management.
